In a fairly quiet season on the Tournament front, moycullen played in two, with vastly contrasting performances. First up came the cork county board tournament in early January. Drawn in a tough pool, they faced tournament favourites, Neptune, and ballincollig. Against Neptune, the team never really got to the pace of the game. They were unable to match them in any facet of the game and after trailing 28-7 at the half, only a 15 point 4th quarter from Connor curran saved them from an embarrassing defeat. A strong start to the ballincollig game (9-0 after the first quarter) seemed to indicate a return to form. However, they failed to capitalise and, in a low scoring encounter, they allowed ballincollig to dig in and make it a battle. In the end, a 3 point winning margin was a fair reflection of the game. The reward for progressing to the quarter finals was a matchup with Galway rivals, Maree. In truth, there was no reward involved as moycullen's poor tournament form continued and they slipped to an embarrassing 46-24 defeat after trailing 17-0 at the end of the first quarter. Definitely a tournament to forget...... The Tolka rovers tournament, at the end of the season, had a daunting look to it, especially as the team was forced to travel without Max Brennan and Cian parsons and would only have Connor curran for one of the group games. Facing Tolka rovers, st malachy's and Kildare gliders, and 5 games over the two days was really going to test the squad. Fortunately, the moycullen team that finished the season was a much more battle hardened outfit than the mid-season one. Opening up against a Tolka team that had beaten a full strength outfit by 30 points before Christmas, they immediately found their rhythm and matched the Dublin champions score for score in a thrilling first half which finished 22 each. Eoghan Kelly was supreme at the guard spot while Ronan Clancy knocked down three 3 pointers as moycullen took the lead early in the second half. Tolka rallied and pulled ahead again but John Hackett helped push them all the way in his best performance of the season. It wasn't enough as Tolka edged to a 6 point win, but it set the tone for the weekend. The second game against st malachy's was a similar thrilling affair. This time the half ended 26 each and despite a more balanced scoring effort from the moycullen team, malachy's closed out a little better to win 52-47. Young James Lyons put In huge effort in this game as did Thomas Hackett, showing that the competition for court time next season will be red hot. The last group game saw the return of Connor curran from Irish training. Facing a Kildare gliders team who had surprisingly beaten both Tolka and malachy's, the result was never in doubt. Gliders had no answer to moycullen's pressure defence and outside shooting. The margin in the end was 6 points but, in truth, moycullen were totally in control. On Sunday, moycullen faced malachy's again in the semi-final. The game was very similar to the first contest.moycullen led by two at the break, 17-15 but were never scoring as freely as the previous day.this was to prove their undoing. Despite putting in a much better defensive performance, 32 points was all they could muster and malachy's managed 40..... In the playoff game, they faced gliders again, this time without the strength and scoring power of Connor curran. However, this mattered little as moycullen's pressure again flummoxed the much bigger Kildare team. At the offensive end, Ronan Clancy had a career game, connecting on 4 three pointers in the first half and five in total on his way to 21 points. They eased to a 41-24 victory and a very satisfactory end to the season. A hard summer IRS ahead but they can certainly look forward to 2013/2014 with optimism.
